Fondation Dar Bellarj
The Contemporary Arts Center in the heart of the Medina

Photography: Detlef Schneider

It all started with the arabic word Bellarj. Stork in english.

The painter Susanna Biederman and her husband Max Alioth found the historic riad  Dar Bellarj (in french “Maison des Cigognes”/ in english:   House of the Storks ), in 1998. The house was at the very beginning a hospital for storks, where a wise man use to cure the birds in a sort of hospital for storks. After that the building was turned into a private residence and a school before being abandoned for 13 years until the swiss couple found it.

Due to their involvement with the city and fascination, they decided it to transform the space and give it a social and cultural dimension.  And that´s how from the riad, the Fondation Dar Bellarj was created to support the vibrant culture of Morocco.

Apart from the exhibitions,  that enhace the traditional arts giving an actual twist, the idea behind the Fondation Dar Bellarj was to  support all the changes taken place in the country. Their mission has been to preserve and promote the fine artisanal crafts of the city as well to allow the highest education in the visual direction for the city, and since its opening, is one of the main exponents of contemporary art of the city. In the beautiful patio you will be able to enjoy concerts during Ramadam as well. A few years, the Biederman Alioth couple also founded the École Superiore des Arts Visuels de Marrakech, to support the development a few blocks away from the Foundation
